Just as soon as I tout my don’t get sick protocol, I am now full-on sick with a cold. Did I tempt fate or is it something else?
I’ve been suffering from a spate of health concerns for the past few years and my new naturopath put me on a cleanse to combat a Candida overgrowth. In a nutshell, candida is a yeast gone wild in the large intestine and prevents the levels of good bacteria from populating, causing all kinds of havoc from chronic fatigue, severe allergies, gastrointestinal upset, and brain fog. Some mainstream doctors say this is pseudoscience, but as someone whose bloodwork looks pretty stellar but I still feel terrible – I am willing to try anything.
For the next 30 (to 90) days, I’m restricted to a low-carb diet. Basically my diet consists of lean proteins, non-starchy veggies, and good fats. No sugar, grains, dairy or alcohol. Minimal fruit. I’m not supposed to drink coffee, but I’ll ween off that in a month or so. I can’t take carb and caffeine withdrawals at the same time. I’m also taking some anti-yeast/fungal medication and some supplements to help repopulate the good stuff. I know from sequencing my microbiome (by the now-defunct uBiome), that I’m sorely lacking in the good ones.
I started the cleanse a few days before the New Year, and I can tell some good things are happening. My knees joints haven’t this felt this great in months, my poop is now a daily occurrence (sorry, TMI) and I’m the bloat is almost gone. That said, this first week hasn’t been fun. I’m definitely experiencing a “Herx Reaction” which is a negative reaction to endotoxin-like products that are released by the yeast in a candida die-off. Again, some people may call it pseudoscience – but when you’re diet already consists of mostly healthy whole foods and almost no processed foods and you still feel terrible, you’re willing to do anything.
Here’s what Dr. Axe says about candida die-off:
While getting candida under control is very important for long-term health, rapidly killing off candida in your body creates a metabolic reaction that releases over 70 different toxins. This is responsible for the uncomfortable candida die off effect, which, unfortunately, means your candida symptoms (and others) may get worse before they get better.
When you experience candida die off, this is a sign that your body is temporarily inflamed, including your liver, adrenals, kidneys and other organs/glands. Metabolites like the neurotoxin called acetaldehyde or gliotoxin, as well as proteins and inflammatory cytokines (like tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and interleukin-8 ) are circulating in your system, which causes you to feel “off.”
This totally explains why my “don’t get sick” protocol isn’t working. There is no cold. It’s a faux cold.
Like most things, I’m gonna be patient, ride it out and be just fine. I hope that’s tomorrow.
