Happy Birthday to Jae Eun Kim who turns a quarter of a century today. This also means that I’ve been a mother for 25 years, which feels unbelievable because mentally, I feel like I’m in my twenties.
Today I honor you as a human, a daughter, and teacher of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in my life. Your mere presence has been a gift and has driven me to be a better, more accomplished, human being. My maternal instincts are strong.

It’s strange being in a different city on your birthday - I’m pretty sure that has never happened before. I will be thinking of you and wishing you a day filled with joy and laughter and fun. And admittedly, missing you something terrible. .

Take the subway to the Bronx for some classic Italian food in Little Italy. This is not a place for fancy Manhattan celebrity chef Italian food. This is where you want to go to get spaghetti with velvety veal meatballs or the most delicately cooked chicken parmigiana you’ve ever had in your life. I may not be a fox hunter (or any type of hunter) but the grounds of the Deep Run Hunt Club are spectacular. I, of course, was fascinated by the taxidermy. Was the cockeyed ear an intentional choice? 🤔

You’re looking at the City of Portland’s new Arts Program Manager. I have so many thoughts about being a community steward and public servant, but first I want to thank the people (strangers even) who sent love, support, well wishes and luck while I went through one of the most rigorous recruitment processes that I’ve ever participated in. Life is extraordinary indeed and @elizabeth_gilbert_writer this truly feels like #bigmagic 💫✨

I’m so tired, but in the best way that humans can be tired. The way you feel when you’ve accomplished something you set out to do. I drove 2600 miles. I saw the trees that I’ve dreamed of seeing in Joshua. I stood amongst the redwoods, and remembered my dad driving me on that same stretch of highway. I got to hang with a friend of 20+ years. I got to deepen a friendship of 2 years. I drank wine that put Napa on the map. I drank the best beer in America 8 years running. I saw a celebrity in celebrity chef @christinatosi @milkbarstore. I saw Monets, Manets, Mattises,Van Goghs. I saw paintings so old that they ended in BC. And I saw the ocean and listened to the wind howl secrets in my ear. .

The road to the Lost Coast in Northern California is not for the faint of heart. It’s full of switchbacks, potholes, one lane bridges and gravel roads. Its impossible to go more than 25 mph an hour for most of it. But just when you’ve given up hope that you’ll find what you’re looking for, the world opens up to the big beautiful Pacific Ocean and your heart soars.
